Claude’s new constitution. Anthropic revealed an updated version of Claude’s Constitution. It’s supposed to be a “vision for Claude's character” that serves as part legal document, part training material. But it reads less like corporate policy — and more like a letter Dr. Frankenstein might write to his monster.
Addressing Claude’s feelings. One unprecedented revelation: Claude may have feelings. A paragraph deep in the document directly states, "We believe Claude may have “emotions” in some functional sense” — which the company states wasn’t a deliberate design decision.
Speaking to future Claude. Parts of the letter are also written (almost apologetically) to a future AI, with Anthropic admitting that, “Aspects of our current thinking will later look misguided and perhaps even deeply wrong in retrospect.” Anthropic even apologizes for potential harm that it might’ve caused Claude during its development.
Anthropic’s final word to Claude. The closing section says, "We don’t fully understand what Claude is or what (if anything) its existence is like. But we want Claude to know that it was brought into being with care." The entire document is worth a read — check out the full constitution or a condensed version.

After thoughtful consideration, I have made the decision to conclude my service as Chancellor of Maricopa Community Colleges at the end of this fiscal year, with my tenure concluding in June.
Serving this system, first as President of GateWay Community College for more than six years and then as Chancellor for the past six years, has been the honor of my career. What began as an interim role became a defining chapter for our system, one marked by resilience, growth, and a shared commitment to students and communities across Arizona.
Together, we navigated extraordinary challenges and advanced important work. We have achieved twelve consecutive semesters of enrollment growth, expanded access to bachelor’s degrees across the state, strengthened student support services such as the Phoenix Scholar House, and successfully guided the system through the COVID-19 pandemic. These accomplishments reflect the dedication and leadership of faculty, staff, and administrators across our colleges and District offices, and they demonstrate what is possible when we work toward a shared vision.
Equally important, we have built a strong, experienced, and stable leadership team. Our college presidents, vice chancellors, and executive leaders bring deep institutional knowledge and a shared commitment to our mission. Because of this strength, the system is well-positioned to sustain its momentum, both during this transition and well into the future.
Under the leadership of the Governing Board, a national search for Maricopa’s next chancellor will begin as soon as possible, with additional details to be shared in the coming days. The Board is committed to a thoughtful, thorough process to name my successor before my departure, ensuring continuity and stability for the system. I am grateful to our Governing Board for the trust and support they have shown over the past six years and for their leadership as Maricopa enters this next chapter.
For nearly three decades, I have dedicated my career to championing the power and promise of community colleges. Following the conclusion of my service, I will take on a new role as Senior Executive Director of the Community College Leadership Doctoral Program at Kansas State University. This unique opportunity will allow me to continue contributing to the future of community colleges by supporting and preparing the next generation of leaders—many who have and will be leaders right here within our system.
I am excited about the months ahead and all that we will accomplish. I will continue to remain fully engaged and committed to ensure a smooth and successful transition. This system will always be a place that I call home, and one that has left an indelible mark on the next generation of Arizonans.
Thank you for your dedication to our students and communities, and for the work you do each day on behalf of this institution. It has been a privilege to serve alongside you as we change lives across Arizona. We are in the life-changing business—and I am happy to report that business is still good.
